The Athletics New Zealand 100km Championships were held today at Christchurch’s Hagley Park, in conjunction with the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Groups “Ultra Trio”.
The race numbers were not huge, but race director Vajin Armstrong was wrapped with the turnout and support the 2km lap race received.
From the outset it was always going to be Asic’s athlete Martin Luke
s race and he set a cracking pace, running 4min kms, well under 7hr pace, for a large majority of the race. The weather started off quite mild and still, but by midday it had cooled off and a breeze had picked up, resulting in many folks, including Lukes, to slow down. Marty still powered home for his 3rd ANZ 100km title in a row- in a smoking fast 7hr08. A remarkable, near solo effort, that “made up for Tarawera” (Marty experienced mixed fortunes at Tarawera 100km back in March). One runner who didn’t slow with the drop in temps was Bryan McCorkendale who ran a very consistent pace throughout the day, picking up a solid 2nd in 8hr13. Rounding out the top 3 and backing up his win at the Northburn 100mile in March was Glen Sutton in 8hr30.
The women’s race was won by NZ rep and multiple age group world record holder Val Mustket. While she lead from start to finish Shannon Litt was never far behind, keeping Val honest. Val run 10hr05 and Shannon 10hr14.
