BCR was able to catch up with a few members of the NZ 24hr team and today we have an interview with 24hr first timer Amy Campbell.
BCR- How did you get into 24hr foot races and what motivates you to race these?
Amy Campbell- I was talked into a marathon and one thing has lead to another…..I am not fast so the longer the better! I love the mental strength that is needed and I get excited about the pain and stiffness when finished.
BCR- Is this your first time representing NZ?
AC- Yep, first time pulling on the fern! I will be singing the national anthem for the whole 24hrs!!
BCR- 24hr races are, generally, on flat, smooth terrain. Is this what you stick to in training or are you getting out in the hills and trails also? What is a typical training week or training block for you?
AC- I try to get offroad in the weekends for longer runs to keep my mind occupied, also great with leg strength and injury prevention. Work restricts too many midweek trail adventures. Most of my preparation for this event has been road based. I love both!!! Hills /Trails/adventures and variety are key for me, I can’t afford to get bored. I’m really good at getting lost so this adds to the adventure
BCR- What is your current best for 24hrs and what are your expectations going into the World Champs?
AC-I haven’t raced a 24hr so I don’t know what to expect, I just want to run as far as I can, be in agonising pain when I cross the finish line and leave Poland knowing I tried!! I have a realistic goal and a dream goal in mind. I will let you know when I return which of these I achieved. Hopefully both!!
