Tarawera Ultra 2013

BCR Tarawera-Ultramarathon-logoThis weekend is brewing as the biggest in New Zealand Ultra Running. Never before has so much off shore talent gathered in New Zealand and with out a doubt the ultra running community and fan’s from around the world will be focusing in on Rotorua this weekend.

The talent is just limited to the race either, with Bryon Powell from coming over to cover the Tarawera Ultra (as well as sampling some of the goods on offer on the South Island pre race). While Bryon has been living large in our South Island trail running play ground, Megan Hicks has written up 2 excellent race previews of the men’s and women’s fields. I don’t want to  repeat to much of what has already been said, so checkout those race previews over on irunfar. If you want more info on some of the elite field have a look at the Tarawera “Elites” page that I did for the race web site a few months ago HERE.

Much has been made of the “Fire” course, and while it will result in slower over all times, at the end  of the day don’t expect this to change the race out come- the course change has not effected my race picks. And what of those picks- well 2 names stand out for me. Sage Canaday for the men and Ruby Muir in the woman. Ruby is going to be running he first 100km, but that has to be the only thing going against her and I think counts for very little (the 2011 Tarawera is the fastest ran, with the first 4 men all going under the then current CR, all running their first 100km- this included Sam Werfords 8hr36). Ruby will not have it all her own way and there are some very solid ladies lining up- again check out Megan’s preview on irunfar.

While I want to see Vajin take out Tarawera after tow 2nd place finishes here and in the process defend the kiwi ultra running pride, it is hard to look past Sage for the win. 100km is a long way, so if Sage dose not fire on the day I have no doubt that Vajin, along with a host of others will expose any weakness- I just don’t think there are any (I guess getting of course could count). Megan’s preview HERE

I write this some where above the upper South Island on my way to Rotorua and will start firing off pre race news and updates as the race nears. Come race day there will be a good stream of updates coming out from Bryon and the Ultra168 crew. I will be crewing the Salomon team (and hopefully doing some pacing).

Friday pre race I be at the race check in expo with a small BCR stand- just a few hats and a few copies of Bryon’s book- “Relentless Forward Progress”. Please stop by and say hi if you are around!
