Tarawera Ultra 2013

The 2013 edition of the Vibram Tarawera Ultra was a much hyped affair and it totally delivered!

Pacing duties! Only just managed to hang on!

No doubt you would have followed the excellent live up dates (when possible due to a lack of reliable cell phone coverage) from irunfar and Ultra168, as well as the post race reports and interviews from these guys. Then there is the 1000′s and 1000′s of photo’s. Poring over gives you a real sense of what a great event  the Vibram Tarwera Ultra is, so it is worth making the time and check them out.

I was not there to “report” or do updates- left that to the pro’s, but helped crew the Salomon guys running in reply teams and then hitched a boat ride to the Tarawera Outlet. I hang out here waiting for Salomon team mate Mick Donges, the 2012 Tarawera champ, to return from the Falls checkpoint, to pace him back to the finish, about 36km. Waiting here I got to see the leaders come through  this included the lead men and top 3 woman. Also the top 5 men as they returned from the Falls. This was a pretty cool experience, as normally I would be well behind these folks and never see them mid race. Between raiding the aid station table for chips and jelly beans for my self, I filled bottles and and gave splits and general got in the way. I then had the pleasure of pacing Mick which was a really great time. While I think I may have failed in my first attempted as a pacer- my jokes were very bad and failed and I probably tried to push Mick a little hard; but we did managed to finish well. It was great with the out and back course, seeing many folks I knew and lots of smiling faces.

There where some great performances- yes Sage and of course Ruby stealing the show, but seeing an event like this from a very different angle I have a whole new appreciation for every one that toes the start line, helps at aid stations and behind the scenes.

Hats off to Barefoot Inc/Vibram for there massive support of the event and helping making Paul Charteris vision of such a grand event come a reality.
