The 2013 Salomon Advance Week (April 4-9) in Moab (Utah), USA, was a memorable experience. Not only for some great insight into the future of Salomon running product and S-Lab technology, but also for the camaraderie and cohesiveness of the Salomon ethos towards work and pleasure.

The Advance Week programme set out by Head of Sports Marketing Greg Vollet was another excellent edition, now in its 6th iteration, with the R and D and product teams presenting some great new innovation and future vision.

Additionally the schedule was very well organised in terms of maximising the opportunity of harnessing the knowledge and input of international athletes, some of whom have visited all six Advance Week meetings and will have experienced many changes over those years.

Over the four days of meetings, feedback sessions, focus groups and trail running tests, no sandstone rock was left unturned. Focus group sessions and the post-test feedback was objective at all times, and with new members on the team (especially from the US) offering fresh perspectives, I am sure that the brand and product team left with much to contemplate and enthuse them in improving the product and appeal of the brand, as well as making new exciting products.

The recovery time was also well spent with a lot of team interaction and calendar planning plus some fun activities such as mountain biking on the famous Slick Rock Trail. This showed the value that Salomon places on a family ethos, which translates from work to leisure time.

For those of you who haven’t been lucky enough to visit Moab and the Utah desert I have to say that it is captivating. Its awesome panoramic nature, red sandstone and dry heat make it unique in so many ways, and I am sure that Salomon products have rarely been tested to such an extent in these conditions. It was very interesting to see how our S-Lab technologies performed and stood up to the conditions as the abrasive underfoot conditions presented new challenges for the product in many cases. I left Utah on Tuesday feeling enthused and confident that Salomon is positioning itself in the market as one of the world’s premium brands with an acute understanding of the sport and the trail running landscape, and hopefully Salomon’s appeal to the North American market will be enhanced by such a week spent in their back yard!

Some of the trail running values which Salomon will try to communicate in the future will be: Freedom, Nature, Respect, Passion, Personal Challenge, Simplicity, Spirit, Discovery and Accessibility

So it is not just about the running. It’s about the satisfaction and sense of well being when you are on the trail as well as sharing that spirit with friends and the community.

What the athletes said :

Jono ripping up Moab.

Jonathan Wyatt (New Zealand) “Coming to the USA was a big step for Salomon, it shows that we are really serious about the North American market and it is definitely the right time for Salomon to push. It’s always fantastic to come back and meet up with all of the athletes from all over the world, and it was great to see some exciting new athletes on the team for 2013 including Tina Lewis and Cameron Clayton.” “Advance Week is always such a cool dynamic, we learn from so much from each other and each year I gain inspiration from all of the new developments in product and the direction of the Salomon brand”.

Emelie Forsberg (Sweden) “I think Advance Week is very inspiring as you meet everyone after the winter, with everyone being really excited to get the summer started to feel that spirit and happiness. We are all also curious of new products, and you want to develop new ideas. I also gain a lot of energy from the week and running here in Moab has been amazing!”

Tina Lewis (US / Canada) “The week was way more than I was expecting! I have a new respect for the company now, they really listen to the athletes and the athletes have a voice and just trying out innovative clothing and shoes is really amazing. It’s really important to test the products objectively too and feeding back on the women’s clothing was especially great for me.” “It’s also been a lot of fun sharing experiences with people from so many countries and learning from them and about them and their running”.

What the R and D said

Serge Chapuis (Apparel)“Advance Week is such a good experience. A good week to share, to discovery, to create a good family – R and D, product, sports marketing and athletes – and during this week we share our visions and passions.” “It’s important to live with the family to appreciate and listen to new comments and new ideas, and it’s a very good way create the future.” “It was also great to come to America and experience this culture and with the athletes from all over the world we find visions and cultures are very different, weather is different, people are different. We take the best of each and hopefully deliver and satisfy that vision.”
