While kiwi Vajin Armstrong was charging around the this past weekend at the Swiss Alpine Marathon a little further back in the field was New Zealand’s favourite English Mountain Runner, and 2X winner of the ShotoverMoonlight Marathon- Martin Cox. Martin is always good for a colourful tale, and does not disappoint-

Hey grant, Vajin is taking all day to write his race report, so I thought I’d write a quick one for you in the style of Rickey Gates who sends his love, he being my previous house guest.
“First I felt awesome and then I felt just okay and then I felt pretty average and then I got to 42km and still there weren’t any gels at the aid stations and I began to hallucinate and then a small German boy passed me and then the first lady runner passed me and then this old guy I knew from a past life in South Tyrol passed me and then I walked for 8km disconsolately up a road that wasn’t very steep at all really and then I came to small village shop and then I walked in and walked out with two boxes of muesli bars and then I came to another gel-less aid station and then I thought bugger this for a game of soldiers and sat down for 30 minutes and drank two litres of coke and ate the stolen muesli bars and had a short nap and drank another litre of coke and ate some green bananas and then I felt awesome again and ran like the wind over two passes wee wee wee all the way home”
footnote: the small German boy was Stephan Hugenschmidt who is my new partner for the
Transalpine run in 3o days time as my original partner has pulled out… and I ran in Hokas and my legs feel great!!!
Keep an eye out for Vajin’s race report in the next day or 2.
